The city of Rincon is looking to scare up even more support this year for a popular event.

Rincon residents, businesses, churches and non-profit organizations are encouraged to create fall scarecrow displays for the city’s third annual Scarecrow Showoff.

“We want to have more participation than ever. How great would it be to have fall scarecrow displays all down Highway 21 and throughout many different neighborhoods in Rincon?” said George Foley, recreation coordinator for the city of Rincon.

Applications to be part of the Scarecrow Showoff are due by Oct. 4, to give ample time to judge all of the different scarecrows. Applications are available on the city’s Web site, www.cityofrincon.com.

Participants can e-mail the application and a photo of their display, or drop off the information at the Rincon Recreation Department or City Hall. Organizers ask that an application not be submitted until the scarecrow display is completed.

“We are looking for humor, creativity and fun in these displays,” Foley said. “Let’s show off our hometown pride.”

Once all the entries are submitted, the city will post them online, at City Hall and at the Recreation Department. Voting will take place online from Oct. 5-18, through a link at www.cityofrincon.com.

“We want to encourage families to go around and take a tour of the scarecrow displays that our citizens have taken so much time to construct,” Foley said.

As added incentive this year, the city is offering first-, second- and third-place prizes in two categories: residential and business/church/non-profit.

The top three finishers in each category will choose one of the following prizes: a free city of Rincon water/utility bill up to $75; a round of golf for two anytime including cart fees at Lost Plantation Golf Club; or a $50 Lost Plantation gift card to be used at the pro shop, at the grille or for playing golf.
