GUYTON — Just four years ago, Jack Schaffner was a homeschool student looking to pursue a new sport.
It didn't take long for Schaffner to make a name for himself as a wrestler for South Effingham.
Now a senior for the Mustangs, Schaffner is one of the top wrestlers in the Effingham County and goes into every match hoping to maintain his undefeated record.
In order to maintain his lofty status, Schaffner said his offseason regimen is simple but requires consistency.
"There are summer camps that we can do," Schaffner said. "I went to a camp at Effingham County High School and I also lift weight, did cardio and I worked out about four days a week just to make sure I stay fit."
While being homeschooled, Schaffner took up martial arts.
Upon enrolling at South Effingham, Schaffner thought the transition from tae kwon do to wrestling would be easy. Tae kwon do features some of the same techniques as wrestling.
"It kind of goes hand-in-hand," Schaffner said.
