Shearouse to recommend firing Hayes

Effingham County School Superintendent Randy Shearouse is expected to recommend to school board members that veteran Effingham County High School girls basketball coach Nate Hayes be fired.

Hayes has been on leave since a Jan. 5 incident involving a player, Shaniqua Goldwire, following the ECHS game with rival South Effingham. Shearouse conducted an investigation of the incident in the succeeding days. A videotape from a school surveillance camera also has been used as evidence in Shearouse’s inquiry.

The player’s mother, Tami Major, filed an incident report with the Effingham County Sheriff’s Department.

In the incident report, Major alleged that Hayes grabbed Goldwire by the arm, slung her against the wall and pressed his left arm against her neck after Goldwire refused to shake hands with the South Effingham players after Effingham County lost to its in-county rival.

The board of education will have a regularly-scheduled meeting tonight and personnel discussions are part of the agenda for executive session.

A hearing for Hayes before the board has not been set.
