Sheriff requests GBI follow-up after inmate found unresponsive

SPRINGFIELD -- The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office requested the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation after an inmate was found unresponsive.

At approximately 6 a.m. Thursday, dispatch was notified to send EMS to the jail after jail officers were unable to wake 64-year-old Kenneth McCullough. 

EMS responded and determined McCullough was deceased. 

No foul play is suspected. Effingham County Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie, however, asked the GBI to investigate in an abundance of caution.
