Sheriff's surprise
Jimmy McDuffie
Effingham County Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie laughs heartily after taking a pie in the face during a United Way of the Coastal Empire-Effingham fundraiser Monday. The wielder of the pie was McDuffie's wife, Wanda, the director of Effingham County EMS. Although she got the original laugh, the sheriff got the last one because he surprised her with a kiss that left whipped cream on her face. - photo by Mark Lastinger/staff

Effingham County Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie laughs heartily after taking a pie in the face during a United Way of the Coastal Empire-Effingham fundraiser Monday at the Effingham County Administrative Complex. The wielder of the pie was McDuffie's wife, Wanda, the director of Effingham County EMS. Although she got the original laugh, the sheriff got the last one because he surprised her with a kiss that left whipped cream on her mask-covered face. For as little as a $1 donations, county employees got to throw pies at a variety of department heads.
