Springfield's own Braxton Calhoun to perform at Mars Theatre

Springfield native Braxton Calhoun will perform at the Mars Theatre in Springfield Saturday at 8 p.m.

The opening act is Stephen Turner, also from Springfield and limited seats still remain online at or by calling (921) 754-7617.

Calhoun is a country artist looking to rattle a few cages with his rock star attitude and blow-your-speakers country style. He brings a level of southern-bred authenticity that trumps all the country wannabes. Braxton’s major influences range from Alan Jackson and Garth Brooks to Breaking Benjamin and Metallica.

“I’m a little too rock for country and a little too country for rock,” he said.

At an early age, Calhoun displayed interest for entertainment by performing skits for his family and at Springfield First Baptist.

It wasn’t that long after graduation that he began the journey to Nashville. With nothing but a guitar and a dream, he spent many years playing in different bands and working odd jobs to make ends meet.

“After a while, I just got lost in the mix and didn’t really know where to start.”

He eventually hooked up with a touring country band called Diamond Hitch.

Diamond Hitch allowed Braxton to develop a true sense of life on the road and what it takes to be a professional musician.

“We performed alongside Billy Currington and Randy Houser at the ‘Night in the Country Music Festival’ after-party,” Calhoun said.

Calhoun is looking to kick-off his solo career by bringing attitude, grit and authenticity back into country music.

His style is best understood during his live performances, which you can see Saturday.
