RINCON, Ga. — Two men were arrested Monday after one allegedly stole an ambulance and led law enforcement on a multi-jurisdictional chase that ended in a crash in Port Wentworth.

The incident began just after 4 p.m. when Rincon police were called to assist Effingham County sheriff’s deputies at the scene of a two-vehicle crash involving individuals who fled on foot. One man ran toward Goshen Road; the other toward McCall Road.

As officers responded near McCall Road, they were flagged down near Davis Tire and told an ambulance had been stolen from the area.

Rincon officers began pursuing the ambulance, which was driven south into Port Wentworth. During the chase, the driver struck a Rincon patrol car, forcing it into another vehicle. The officer involved suffered minor injuries.

Attempts to end the pursuit using a PIT maneuver were unsuccessful. Port Wentworth police deployed spike strips, and the chase ultimately ended when the ambulance crashed into a ditch near Saussy Road and Highway 21.

The driver, identified as Dwayne Simmons, 56, of Savannah, was taken into custody at the scene. He faces multiple charges, including:

  • Hijacking a motor vehicle

  • Aggravated assault (two counts)

  • Fleeing or attempting to elude

  • Hit and run

  • Reckless driving

  • Driving with suspended licenses

  • Failure to obey traffic control device

  • Obstruction (three counts)

  • Interference with emergency personnel by threats or violence (two counts)

  • Interference with government property

A second man, Georgell Brown, 51, fled from the scene of the initial crash on McCall Road and was later arrested. He is charged with loitering.

Both men were transported to the Effingham County Jail. Effingham County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Brian Bailey said neither suspect is cooperating with investigators.
