The Senior Center in Springfield needs more volunteers to distribute meals to home-bound seniors. Meals are served Monday through Friday.
“Even if someone can help only one or two days a week, would be a blessing,” said Senior Center Director Theresa Johnson.
“I started volunteering with my son and since my husband retired, he has taken over the route,” Melissa Calhoun posted on her Facebook page. “On days that my son does not work, he eagerly takes his turn to deliver the meals. He really enjoys the interaction with these fantastic people.”
Johnson added there are routes for Clyo, Guyton, Springfield, and two in Rincon. “Meals are prepared by Summit Foods and delivered by 8:30 a.m.” Johnson said. “And the routes take about two hours to cover.” Meals vary between hot meals and cold. For example, meals delivered on Aug. 15 was a cold mean that included lettuce, tomato, onion, tuna, crackers and honeydew slices.
Anyone interested in volunteering to deliver meals should call Johnson at 912-754-2138. “We offer full training before we send them out on their own,” Johnson added. “Drivers are reimbursed 67 cents per mile.”
“Please consider volunteering! You will not regret a minute of the time you spend.” Calhoun added.
The Effingham County Senior Center is at 804 S. Laurel St. in Springfield.
