Weather advisory extended

The National Weather Service has extended the Winter Weather Advisory for our area until 11 a.m. Friday.

Emergency officials are asking all citizens to stay off the roadways as conditions are still dangerous for travel. As temperatures rise, road conditions will still be hazardous due to a mix of snow, ice and slush. There is a high risk for collisions and/or skidding across roads and intersections.

Throughout Thursday evening, temperatures will drop again and refreeze areas of meltwater. If you must be on the roads, use extreme caution.

Remember to clear snow and ice from all windows of your vehicle.

Watch for emergency crews and road crews working.

Give yourself extra time for travel and drive slower than the posted speed limit.

Check routes before you leave for possible road and bridge closures.

Be careful if you are walking outside: slips, trips, and falls are a high risk on icy surfaces.

Current conditions across Effingham: temperatures averaging 36° with 1-3” of snow and ice accumulation remaining but beginning to melt.
