Even without sales tax holiday, shop local

Dear Editor:

As an organization that works with and for our local businesses on a daily basis here in the county, the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce would like to encourage Effingham County citizens to shop locally and support your friends and neighbors as you begin to do your back to school shopping for the start of the school year.

Our state is not participating in the ‘sales tax holiday’ this year, however, it still behooves all  of us to do as much of our shopping in our local area and within our state as we can possibly do. The few dollars you may save by shopping outside of the county represent hundreds of dollars that could be spent supporting our local businesses.

At times like this, we have to take the longer view and realize that the businesses we do not support today are the businesses that close up or go somewhere else tomorrow. We can hardly complain about the restaurants and retailers that aren’t here in the county if we don’t get out and continue to support the ones that are here.

So get out and shop — here in Effingham County. Support your friends and neighbors. You’ll be glad you did.
