Fireworks show a good community event

Dear Editor,

Folks, it’s another one of those “I’m sorry for you if you missed it!” kind of happenings.  That is, the annual 4th of July fireworks in Springfield at the ECHS football stadium.

Now, I know that you may have missed because of the 27th of June instead of the 4th of July. The sponsors did the best they could to get a 4th date but the company had already had their calendar filled. You may recall the difficulty in getting the funding together this year which certainly delayed the City of Springfield’s ability to sign a contract. But due to other governmental units coming forward, as well as local business and individuals, the funding came together. I think a special mention should be made that our newest industrial citizen, EFACEC came through with a big contribution. Welcome to our county EFACEC. Maybe we can help you celebrate one of your Portuguese national holidays.

But back to the show — a full 20 minutes or more, with all kinds of displays of star bursts, rockets, and what-have-you. It was a great fireworks show and had the music to accompany it that just gave you one of those “aren’t we glad to be an American feelings.” And in difficult economic times it was a free show. Lots of families with small children took advantage of the opportunity. It is a tailgating event for many families/groups. A true community event.

Unfortunately, the attendance was down some but there was big crowd and we all enjoyed the fireworks, and evening (with a little cooling breeze) and seeing friends and neighbors.

Thanks to the City of Springfield for organizing this event each year. And thanks to all of the sponsors — you made our day, our night and our week.
