Thursday is deadline for property tax return

Dear Editor,

Notice to all property owners: The deadline is April 1 to make your property tax return. This is your opportunity to state what you think your property is worth and if the tax assessors to do not agree, you have the right of appeal and perhaps get a better level of value. Even if your property is in CUVA, you should try to maintain a realistic fair market value.

The form is available on line at www. effinghamcounty.org. Go to departments, click on Tax Assessor, click on Tax Payers Return of Property. The form may be completed on line but must be printed, signed and then sent to the tax assessors office. The information to complete is on your tax bill. A good level to look at is what the value was in 2008 and perhaps discount that, as today’s market is below that mark.
The completed form, signed by the taxpayer, can be mailed or taken to the tax office. It must be done no later than April 1.
