SPRINGFIELD -- The South Effingham Lady Mustangs (22-2-1) are one win away from securing Region 2-AAAAAA's top spot for the state playoffs after beating Effingham County 5-1 at Rebel Field on Wednesday.

The top-seeded Lady Rebels (16-4) got a couple extra-base hits against Bailey Kendziorski but didn't take advantage of them. Kendziorski fanned eight and didn't issue a walk.

The second-seeded Lady Mustangs, meanwhile, racked up 11 hits, included a team-leading three by Alex Brown and Avery Roddenberry. Brown, who started the game with a triple, scored twice and Roddenberry, who smacked a double had three RBI.

Kendziorski helped her own cause with two hits.

Rylee Mills and Julia Carter pitched for Effingham County. Carter took over in the second frame with her team down 2-0.

The championship game is set at 5 p.m. Thursday at South Effingham. The Lady Mustangs will play Effingham County or the winner of Wednesday night's Glynn Academy-Richmond Hill game. Effingham County will play the victor of Wednesday's late contest at 3 p.m. Thursday.

The if-necessary game of the double-elimination tourney is slated or 6:30 p.m. Thursday at South Effingham.
