Lady Rebels wrap up regular season with top tourney spot

The Effingham County Lady Rebels (15-3, 11-1) clinched top billing in the double-elimination Region 2-AAAAAA softball tournament by waxing Glynn Academy 8-1 in Brunswick on Thursday,

Outfielder Enna Lackey paced the Lady Rebels’ 11-hit assault with three safeties. She also drove in a pair of runs.

Julia Carter, Rylee Mills and Shelby Aiken collected multiple hits for the winning team, too. Mills scored twice.

Carter went the distance on the mound. She allowed two hits and walked three. She racked up eight strikeouts.

Effingham County received a first-round tournament bye. It is set to play the winner of Tuesday’s 2 p.m. Glynn Academy-Statesboro game on its home field in the second round at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The other first-round game at Rebel Field pits Richmond Hill against South Effingham at 4 p.m.

The victors of Tuesday’s Glynn Academy/Statesboro-Effingham County and Richmond Hill-South Effingham games will collide in the winner’s bracket at 4 p.m.Wednesday. The winner will get to host the title round Thursday.

Loser’s bracket contests are slated at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The championship game is slated Thursday at  5 p.m. The if-necessary game is set for 6:30 p.m.
