Mustangs dominant in opening baseball games

The South Effigham Mustangs charged out of the 2021 chute Saturday by winning two games in the  Bash at the Beach.

The Mustangs won their opener against Pike County 9-2 and then silenced Sandy Creek 5-0 in a no-hitter.

The no-no was a combined effort between Nick Milbrandt and Avery Sikes. Milbrandt started, logging four strikeouts and two walks in 4 1/3 innings. Sikes fanned five and also walked two while finishing the gem.

Noah Hollis was an offensive standout, leading South Effingham with three hits and two RBI. Hunter Walthour chipped in two hits and one RBI.

South Effingham pounded 14 hits against Pike County, including a team-high three by Nick Duke and Zach Zorbo. Kaleb Johnson, Phillip Cooper and Zack Wert each added two.

Zorbo drove in five runs.

Johnson was the winning pitcher, allowing no hits in five innings. He fanned five.

Brantley Griggs, Carson Spendiff and Hollis worked the final frames on the mound, allowing a total of two hits.
