SPRINGFIELD -- Effingham County swept Evans 5-2 and 10-2 in a non-region baseball doubleheader at Rebel Field on Thursday.

Matthew Ford got the Rebels off to a hot start by doubling in two runners in the first inning of the opening contest.  He finished with three hits and three RBI.

Tyler Wells wells also added an RBI.

Effingham County logged six stolen bases, included two apiece by Timmy Burnsed and JD Coleman.

Josh Bassett was the winning pitcher. He allowed three hits and one run in five innings while striking out seven. The mound duties were finished by Blake Hendrix and Zach Garcia.

In the nightcap, the Rebels pounded 10 hits. Four of them came in a five-run second inning.

 Hendrix and Tucker Wilson each tallied two hits. Wilson had two RBI and Hendrix had one.

Garcia also had two RBI.

Trent Newberry scored three times.

Taylor Rigdon earned the pitching victory, allowing four hits while doing the distance. He fanned 12.

About 25 South Effingham High School football moms hit the field Monday night for Mustang Mamas, a preseason event giving them a hands-on taste of drills, coaching and camaraderie. Between laughs and learning, the moms gained a new appreciation for what their sons go through in the Georgia heat.
