Rebels turn back Mustangs in series opener

GUYTON -- Effingham County scored eight runs in the first three innings and held on for a 10-8 win over rival South Effingham on Monday night.
The Rebels snapped a five-game losing streak in the series. Effingham County (13-12, 10-3 in Region 2-AAAAAA)  increased its region lead to two games.

Rebels leadoff hitter Tyler Wells was 3-for-3 with three RBI to lead the team's attack. Blake Hendrix had two hits and drove in three runs and pitched a scoreless seventh inning to register a save.

Griffin Howe was the starter and winner, allowing four earned runs in six innings.

Hunter Walthour had two hits and drive in a run for the Mustangs, who dropped to 18-7, 8-5.

The second of the three-game set is Wednesday in Springfield.

Effingham County Pushes Late but Falls to Johnson at Home

 SPRINGFIELD, Ga. —Effingham County's Nakera Hawkins poured in 17 points and Shaunici Calhoun added 16, but the Rebels fell to visiting Johnson 53-45 on Saturday night.

Hawkins suffered a lower leg injury midway through the fourth quarter. Despite missing their leading scorer, ECHS cut into Johnson's lead before the Atomsmashers pulled away in the final minute.
