South Effingham’s Blaine Bunch tied for medalist honors in the boys competition and Brooke Capwell won the girls individual title at the Region 3-AAA golf match at Waynesboro Country Club on Tuesday.

Bunch shot a 73 to tie Burke County’s John Keller. Capwell’s 98 was the best girls score. Both will advance to the Class AAA state tournament. The boys tournament also will be at Waynesboro Country Club, and the girls tournament will be at Applewood Golf Course in Keysville on May 7.

The Mustangs came within one shot of qualifying for the state tournament as a team. Benedictine won the region crown with a total of 305 while South Effingham and Burke County tied for second at 318.

Burke won the second-place trophy and the berth in the state tournament in a playoff.

The Mustangs had a player disqualified for using a range finder.

Led by Capwell, the girls finished fifth in the 10-team event.

“My guys and girls played great,” South Effingham coach Greg Manior said.
