Effingham County staved off elimination Thursday in the GRPA Senior boys baseball tournament, defeating Warner Robins 9-1.

But Friday, Fitzgerald eliminated Effingham 6-2.

Purple Hurricane Ward Massee had an eventful day. With the game tied 2-2 in the fifth inning, Massee hit a double to left field, scoring two runs.

The ’Canes added another run, and then Massee went to the  mound and shut down Effingham for the win.

Effingham coach Ray Griffin said a few key plays decided the game.

“They found the holes and started scoring,” he said. “We hit the ball well, just right at them.”

For Effingham, Austin Purnell and Jared Slater each doubled and Jonathan Sharpe went 2-for-2.

In the win against Warner Robins, Waylon Parrish pitched a one-hit complete game — five innings — for the win. Ward and Sharpe had two hits apiece.
