Effingham teams come up just short at state

Effingham County Recreation and Parks had three teams advance to Georgia Recreation and Park Association state baseball and softball tournaments July 11-13.

The 11-12-year-old Midget Girls played in an 11-team tournament in Dublin, the 13-14-year-old Junior Girls played their tournament in Vidalia and Effingham hosted the 13-14-year-old Junior Boys at Sandhill Complex.

The Effingham Midget Girl All-Stars won by forfeit in the first round of play over Troup County. They advanced through the second round of play by beating Thomaston-Upson.

Wayne County defeated the Midget girls in the third game, placing them in the losers’ bracket of the double-elimination tournament. Effingham fell to the girls from Dublin-Laurens County to be eliminated.

The Effingham Junior Girl All-Stars played a rain-soaked tournament. The Effingham girls fell to Augusta in the first round. Rain suspended play on Friday and play continued on Saturday. Effingham won its first losers’ bracket game by forfeit over Swainsboro. That set up a rematch with Augusta, with Augusta claiming the victory.

Effingham hosted the Class B Junior Boys state tournament at Sandhill Complex. Six teams traveled to participate in the double-elimination baseball tournament.

The Effingham boys dropped their first game to a strong Ware County team. They then lost to Vidalia after losing a three-run lead late in the game. Ware County went on to win the GRPA state championship with a win over Lyons on Saturday.
