The hoops will be blazing at Giles Park on Saturday as Pastor Greg Brunson hosts the first My Sons and Me, 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament.

The tournament will be held from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and everyone is keeping their fingers crossed that the weather will allow the second ball court to be finished in time for the day’s play.

Construction is currently under way on a second basketball court in the park, but recent rains have been playing havoc with the building schedule. Brunson said that if the other court can’t be finished in time for the tournament, they would utilize the tennis courts as a backup.

City Recreation Director David Wooten brought out bleachers and benches for spectators to use Saturday. He also said that a large roped off grassy area was meant to serve as additional parking for this and other events at the park.

As of late Monday, 15 teams had signed up to play and Brunson said registration was still open and would be taken the morning of the tournament. Play will be broken into three age groups, 10 to 13 years old; 14 to 16; and 16 to 18. The teams are designed to be made up of two boys and one older man. The adult should be 10 to 15 years older than the boys, according to Brunson. Brackets are being set up for 20-25 teams.

“We are anticipating that the additional court will be finished by then, and there will be local vendors there for refreshments for those that are playing, and we’ve asked various organizations in the community,” Brunson said.

He said they are anticipating great weather for the event, which is sponsored by “We are One, Community Efforts.” For more information or to sign up, call Wooten at 826-0238, Brunson at 429-3005, or the Church of the Harvest at 826-6461.
