Lady Rebels edge Brunswick, fall to Calvary

The Cavalry Lady Cavaliers handed the Effingham County Lady Rebels basketball team their first loss under interim coach Curtis Stevens with a 46-37 defeat Saturday night.

Sierra Goldwire had 12 points for the Lady Rebels (9-5) and Shaniqua Goldwire had eight. Amanda Young had seven points, Kyana Barber had six points and Shatika Flowers and Stephanie Williams each had two points.

Sarah Covington led all scorers with 25 points for the Lady Cavaliers (13-3), ranked fourth in the state among Class A teams.

The Lady Rebels followed up a win over Hardeeville (S.C.) in Stevens’ first game on the bench with a 53-48 Region 3-AAAA win over Brunswick on Friday.

Sierra Goldwire led the way with 22 points and Shaniqua Goldwire added 16 as the Lady Rebels improved to 2-1 in the region.

Amanda Young added seven points, Stephanie Williams had five points and Kyana Barber had three points.

Zandra Green topped all scorers with 29 points for the Lady Pirates.

Effingham hosts Hardeeville Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a non-region contest.
