Lady Rebels hold off Wayne Co.

Even without its starting backcourt, the Effingham County Lady Rebels basketball team has continued an amazing roll of late.

Sierra Goldwire scored seven points in the fourth quarter, and the Lady Rebels pulled away from the Wayne County Lady Yellow Jackets for a 36-25 victory Friday night.

Effingham County (11-5, 3-1 Region 3-AAAA) snapped a 17-17 halftime tie by outscoring the Lady Jackets 10-1 in the third quarter. Kyana Barber had six of her team-high 16 points in the pivotal run.

Goldwire scored 13 points in the victory, while Whitney Roberson had five and Jasmine Wallace had two points.

Alexia Bell led all scorers with 19 points, getting eight of Wayne County’s nine first-quarter points and scoring 14 in the first half. Lavenna Stevens had three points for the Lady Yellow Jackets (5-9, 0-2), Nicole Fluker had two and Andrea Fulmore scored one point.

The Lady Rebels, 4-1 under interim coach Curtis Stevens, also played without senior forward Shaniqua Goldwire.
