The Effingham County girls soccer team saw the other side of the coin it was flipped last week.

After a weather-induced layoff of a week and a half, the Lady Rebels fell 2-1 to Glynn Academy on Friday in the second game in 24 hours.

“The kids were tired,” Effingham coach Mike Baczynski said. “They played two games on two nights in a row and they were just fighting right down to the end.”

Korie Van Curen put the Lady Rebels in front at the 5:15 mark into the game. Alyx Pitts sent a lob pass down the left side for the speedy Van Curen, who chased down the pass. She drew the Lady Red Terrors keeper off her line and struck a shot that bounced into the goal.

The Lady Red Terrors (8-2 overall, 6-0 in Region 3-AAAA) knotted the game midway through the first half. After Lady Rebels keeper Kristin Burgstiner turned away freshman midfielder Kari Butler, junior striker Stephanie Kaiser pounced on the rebound and fired it home with 21:36 to go in the half.

With 11 minutes left in the half, Burgstiner easily handled a short hop of a direct kick from 35 yards out. She got some help from defense when Lynnsee Wood covered the net as Burgstiner challenged a Lady Red Terror attacker. Wood kicked out Hannah Veazey’s shot from point-blank range. Then Burgstiner made three saves in a matter of seconds with less than 3 minutes to go.

But in the waning moments of the half, Kaiser blasted a direct kick from 40 yards away. The low shot wriggled through Burgstiner’s hands and into the net behind her.

“That happens. It’s unfortunate,” Baczynski said. “Sometimes that makes the difference. You’ve got to know KB is a great keeper.”

The Lady Rebels and Burgstiner kept the Lady Red Terrors within reach, thanks to Burgstiner’s play and some luck. Kaiser had an open net after Burgstiner collided with one of her defenders near the top of the 18-yard box, but her shot rolled wide.

Burgstiner later denied Allie Brashear’s turn-and-fire shot with 12:40 to go and stopped her again after the freshman striker made a long run 10 minutes later.

Effingham fell 2-1 to Ware County on Thursday night in a game Baczynski said his team dominated — other than the score.

“It was real frustrating because they really controlled the game,” he said of his players. “We controlled most of the possessions in the second half. We just couldn’t find the back of the net.”

Effingham County (3-5, 2-4 in the region) travels to Wayne County on March 25.
