SAVANNAH — Effingham County’s softball team continued its winning ways, defeating Calvary Day School 9-0 on Tuesday.

The Lady Rebels have won 16 of their past 17 games and are 18-3 overall.

In the win over Calvary, Effingham’s batters were unstoppable, picking up 12 hits.

Kayla Calhoun led the barrage with four hits. Marie Fogle and Shelby Duff had two hits apiece. Tabby Douberly, Kendall Usher, Ashlyn Newman, Kalin Martin and Whitney Smith also recorded hits.

In Smith’s first at-bat, she smacked a double down the left field line, scoring three runs.

“This is our peak time and I hope we can keep it going,” ECHS coach Tesh Pace said. “The girls have been working hard and are putting in extra effort.”

In addition to hitting, the Lady Rebels showed the Class A Cavaliers that they also can pitch and field.
Duff and Emily Waltz combined for a three-hit shutout.

Duff pitched the first three innings and allowed one hit.

Waltz used a combination of fastballs, two-seam changeups, drop balls and rise balls to limit the Lady Cavaliers to two hits in the final four innings.

“Shelby is an excellent pitcher and I’m here to back her up anytime she needs me,” Waltz said. “I feel really confident and I want to pitch good.”

Effingham is 6-1 in Region 3-AAAA South and concludes region play tonight with a 6:30 game at Brunswick High.
