After two knee surgeries, Jessica Mason thought she would not play sports again.
But, through perseverance the former South Effingham Lady Mustang is going to play in the outfield for Thomas University.
Mason signed a scholarship to play softball with the 2004 NAIAD champions on Friday.
“I’m real excited. Because of the knee surgery this year, I didn’t think I would get signed anywhere,” she said. “I’m excited about going to a good team. I can’t wait.”
Thomas volunteer assistant softball coach Jeff Rainwater is excited about Mason joining the Lady Night Hawks.
“I’m real excited about her coming to Thomas University, especially the bat she brings and her speed,” he said. “She has a good chance to start.”
For the Lady Mustangs, Mason batted .340 last season with 20 RBIs, with half of them coming in the playoffs.
“I’m extremely proud of her,” he said. “She has persevered over everything. I can use her as an example of anyone who gets hurt. She has a never give up attitude.”
