May, Scott lead Chain to world series

South Effingham High School's Colby May and Effingham County High School's Dylan Scott were part of the championship Chain baseball team.

The Chain baseball team out of Savannah won the Barrett-Fletcher World Series in St. Petersburg, Fla., becoming the third team from the Chain to win a championship in two weeks.

The team defeated the American Nationals from Missouri 13-0  at Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, to claim the title. Georgia Tech signee Brandon Cumpton earned the win on the mound, his second of the tournament.

The Chain opened the tournament with a 12-0 win over the Jefferson County Blazers from Missouri. Garrett Baker earned the win.

Next, the Chain defeated the Sportstech Stars from Georgia 10-5 with Chandler Hall earning the win.
The Chain then beat the Tampa Bay Angels 16-3, with Gary Smith earning the win.

In the final game of pool play, Thomas Nichols held the Redbirds from St. Louis to two runs in the Chain’s 5-2 win.

Starting bracket play, Cumpton earned the win for the Chain in an 8-0 win over the Angels.
Nolan Belcher followed with a shutout in an 8-0 win for the Chain over the Seminole Baseball Club from Florida.

In the semifinals, the Chain had a rematch with the Seminoles. This time, it wasn’t close as the bats exploded in a 17-1 win. Baker returned to the mound to earn his second win of the tournament.

Kris Edge and Dana Edge coach the Chain. Players include Thomas Nichols, Aaron Hoffer, Josh Collins, Christian Glisson, Garrett Baker, Josh Whitaker, Brandon Cumpton, Josh Purvis, Chandler Hall, Vince Smith, Skyler Hoffer, Lyle Allen, Jeff Rowland, Colby May, Tony Chisman, Nolan Belcher, Dylan Scott, Blake McCullers and Gary Smith. Micky Masters is the bat boy.
