Nine Rebels headed to state meet

The Effingham County Rebels are sending nine wrestlers to the Class AAAA state traditionals tournament after their finishes in the Area 3-AAAA tournament Saturday at Brunswick High.

Josh Barnhill, Kevin Ulmer and Zach Gilliam all won individual titles, with Barnhill claiming the top spot in the 103-pound class, Ulmer winning at 125 and Gilliam taking first at 130 pounds.

Desmond Washington took second at 189 pounds, Michael King was second at 285 and Wade Hall was second at 119 pounds.

The Rebels got third-place finishes from Brandon Macklunis (152) and Casey Herrington (160).

Nick Cannon got fourth, and a spot in the state tournament, in the 140-pound class.

Glynn Academy, with four first-place finishers and 11 state qualifiers, won the area tournament with 202.5 points.
Effingham was second with 148.5 points, with Lakeside in third at 110 points. Ware (96 points) was fourth, followed by Brunswick (88.5), Greenbrier (88), Evans (56) and Richmond Academy (34).

Action in the Class AAAA tournament begins Thursday morning at the Gwinnett Center.
