GUYTON — South Effingham’s top battery is looking to put a charge in a college baseball program.

On Jan. 23, seniors Jakob Valleroy and catcher Devin  Stefanski signed national letters of intent to attend Piedmont College. The Demorest-based Lions are consistently one of NCAA Division III’s best baseball teams.

“They put a lot into baseball up there,” Valleroy said. “Their field is amazing and the whole school revolves around the baseball team.”

Valleroy is happy that Stefanski will join him in the college ranks.

“He and I are like brothers right now,” Valleroy said. “Going up there together is going to make us even stronger. It will make me feel more comfortable instead of going up there and not knowing anybody.

“I know he’s got my back and I’ve got his back, of course.”

Stefanski echoed his teammate’s sentiment.

“That’s very big for me,” he said.

Valleroy and Stefanski have played each other since they were in a league for 11 and 12 year olds.

“His team was always better,” Valleroy joked.

Valleroy has been a top-notch pitcher and shortstop for South Effingham. He expects to be limited to the mound at Piedmont.

“We’ll have to wait and see. Whatever works,” he said. “We are playing ball.”

Stefanski has played catcher since he was a sophomore but also has experience at the corner infield spots.

“I love playing catcher,” he said. “It will definitely keep you on your toes.”
