GUYTON, Ga. – One swing. That’s all it takes. It sounds like a television commercial for a legal group, but the phrase aptly describes the competitive softball series between rivals No. 6 Effingham County and No. 8 South Effingham.
The teams meet today at 6:30 p.m. in Guyton for the second time this season. Ten of the last 11 games between the Rebels and Mustangs have been determined by a single swing of the bat. ECHS is ranked sixth in Class 5A in ScoreAtlanta’s Top 10 rankings. South is eighth.
ECHS’ Shelby Zeigler delivered the latest game-winning swing with a fifth-inning, three-run double that broke a tie in the Rebels’ 5-4 victory on Aug. 6. During their last 11 meetings, the Mustangs have won six times and the Rebels five. Six of the 11 games were decided by one run, and four were decided by home runs with runners on base that broke ties.
South (5-1) enters the week with five wins in a row since its season-opening loss to ECHS. The Mustangs are coming off a three-game sweep of Bradwell Institute, outscoring the Tigers by a combined 59-0. The Rebels (5-2) have road wins over Glynn Academy and Metter after a mini two-game skid.
