Effingham County’s football team’s back is against the wall. The Rebels are 2-2 in Region 3-AAAA, having lost their last two, and have a pivotal game Friday at Glynn Academy. If the Rebels lose, then making the playoffs will be nearly impossible.

Only four of the region’s 10 teams qualify for the state playoffs and Effingham and Glynn are currently tied for fifth.

“We want to get back on the winning track,” ECHS coach Jack Webb said. “If we want to go to the playoffs then we have to win some games.”

Glynn coach Rob Ridings said he doesn’t believe the loser will be necessarily left out of the playoffs, but that it will be difficult to advance.

“There’s still a lot of football left with teams that are above us,” he said. “They still have to play each other and anything can happen on a Friday night. I wouldn’t say the loser is completely out, but you’re not in control of your own destiny.”

Glynn is 3-2 overall and coming off a big 23-21 region win over Ware County. Two weeks ago, the Red Terrors took Statesboro to overtime before falling 19-16. The week after, they lost to cross-town rival Brunswick 20-17.

“The biggest difference this season is we’re much healthier the first part of the season than we were last year,” Ridings said. “That’s really helped us.”

Both squads were off last week, so that has given both teams plenty of time to rest, work on the basics and prepare a strategy for the game.

Webb said the Rebels are healed and ready to go.

“Practice has been good both weeks,” he said. “I hope it gets us ready for a second string of fire and gets us back to our winning ways.”

Glynn runs a hybrid of the wing-T offense and lines up in a wide tackle six on defense. However, Ridings likes to mix it up at times.
