Rebels run past Cavaliers

Steven Tarpley scored 19 points and the Effingham County Rebels basketball team knocked off Calvary 72-65 Saturday night in Savannah.

Five players scored in double figures for the Rebels (5-9), who did their damage from inside the paint and outside the perimeter. Marquel Manior had 13 points, Nolan Spake had 11 points and Perry Herbert and Darryl Wright each scored 10 points.

Cody Padgett paced three Cavaliers in double digits with 18 points.

The Brunswick Pirates claimed their first Region 3-AAAA win of the year at Effingham’s expense Friday night, holding on for a 55-53 victory.

Perry Herbert had a game-high 19 points for the Rebels, who fell to 0-3 in the region. He had 11 in the second quarter and hit three 3-pointers in the period. Tarpley and Manior each had eight points, Wright had seven, Spake scored six points and Jonathan Duff added five points.

Harold Small and James McRae had 15 points apiece for the Pirates (2-12). Darius Slay added 10 points.

Herbert had 11 of his team-high 19 points in the first quarter as the Rebels outlasted Hardeeville (S.C.) 61-57 in overtime last Tuesday. Wright had 14 points and Manior had six of his 12 points in the fourth quarter. Effingham trailed 41-39 going into the fourth period.

Derrick Roberts had 20 points for the Hurricanes but none in overtime.
