South finishes fourth

DULUTH — The South Effingham High School wrestling team carried reminders of Thomas Medlin throughout the week. They're carrying home a school-best fourth-place finish in the Class AAA tournament at the Gwinnett Center.

The Mustangs had seven individual state finishers, with Jason Screen (135 pounds) and Robbie Collum (145) finishing third in their respective weight classes.

Effingham County also had two third-place finishers, as Josh Barnhill (103) and Kevin Ulmer (125) won their consolation brackets.

The Rebels' Zach Gilliam (130) was sixth in his weight class.

Josh Jameson (125) and Adam Morse (189) had fourth-place finishes for the Mustangs. Alex Wendell (119) finished fifth and Chad Tucker (140) and Zac Nelson (160) each finished sixth place in their weight classes.

The Mustangs finished with 133.5 points, eight ahead of fifth-place Hardaway. Gilmer (226) points won the state title, followed by Cass (212) and Henry County (162.5).

The Rebels tied for 13th with Cherokee with 76 points, one point behind Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe. Eastside (159 points) won the Class AAAA state title.
