The South Effingham girls tennis team downed Harlem 4-0 to claim the Region 3-AAA Wednesday at Patriots Park in Augusta.
Megan Dunbar beat Megan Perry 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and No. 3 singles seed Katie Tanner blanked Brenna Cook 6-0, 6-0. Jessie Kessler took the first set from Brandi Cook 6-0 at No. 2 singles, but that match wasn’t completed since the overall outcome had been decided.
In doubles, Cassie Hiatt and Allison Williford beat Brittni Dickens and Jessie Miller 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 and Ciara Knowles and Katherine Perrin blanked Erin Neal and Katie Crenshaw 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2.
The Mustangs boys took fourth, beating Thomson 5-0 but falling 4-1 to Benedictine in the third-place match.
Against Thomson, top singles Geoff Beecher beat Bob Brunson 6-0, 6-1, Sean Juergens downed John Allen 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Sam Barber led Chris Bowick 6-3, 3-0 at No. 3 singles when their match was called.
The top doubles team of Austin Kuster and Nick Edel beat Michael Coke and Kevin Dent 6-0, 6-1 and Shane Jenkins and Max Barber took No. 2 doubles by forfeit.
Jenkins and Max Barber had the lone win against BC, defeating the Cadets’ Edward Larossa and Steven Carver 6-2, 6-1. Daniel Maggioni and Mathew Moore beat Kuster and Edel 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1.
BC’s William Drought beat Beecher 6-2, 6-3, Ross Kooden downed Juergens 6-0, 6-1 and Sam Barber fell to Andrew Jones 6-1, 6-3.
Both South Effingham teams advanced to the Class AAA state tournament.
