TRACK & FIELD NOTEBOOK: Edge breaks South's pole vault mark

Sophomore Aubrey Edge skied 9 feet to break the South Effingham girls’ pole vault record Friday at the Alley Invitational in Richmond Hill.

Edge bettered the previous mark of 8 feet set by Sydney Sticha last year at the region championships and again at Sectionals.

Edge won the pole event at the Alley Invitational, one of two Mustang girls to place first in an event. Cheyenne Ryan won the 2000 steeplechase with a time of 9:05.06.

SEHS boys winning events were Devin Hallman (52.08 in the 400), Victavious Smith (16.73 in the 110 hurdles) and Tanner Hughes (44-9.25 in the shot).

ECHS girls had some winners at Richmond Hill as well. Candace Kieffer (5:22.86 in the 1600) and Enna Lackey (16.40 in the 100 hurdles) won their events.

Second-place finishers for ECHS and SEHS were:  for the Rebels, Abby McDonald (12.71 in the 100; 35-9.25 in the shot); for the Mustangs, Caroline Motes (1:05.51 in the 400), Kymberlea Coppin (4-8 in the high jump) and the girls’ 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams; for the SEHS boys, Cameron Edwards (6-4 in the high jump, 20-5.5 in the long jump and 41-9.75 in the triple jump) and Cailan Howard (9:44.52 in 3200) and the 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams.

Clara Vorel, a 6-foot-3 middle blocker for South Effingham High School, has established herself as one of the area’s top volleyball players. With nearly 700 kills and more than 230 blocks in her career, she enters her senior year committed to Towson University and determined to lead the Mustangs back to the state tournament.
