The Effingham County school system will begin registering kindergarten students, by appointment only at the Central Registration Center, March 9-20 for the 2009-10 school year. Parents who are enrolling their child in the system for the first time must call 754-2530 to schedule an appointment for testing and registration. (Pre-k students who are already enrolled with the school system will be tested and registered at their school. These parents do not need to make an appointment.)

Registration and testing will take place at the Board of Education’s Central Registration Center located at 306 N. Ash St. in Springfield, across the street from the BOE’s central offices. Parents do not need to contact the school that their child will attend prior to making an appointment. Each school’s instructional supervisor will be present at the Central Registration Center on their designated registration days. (See schedule below)
A child must be five years of age on or before Sept. 1, to begin kindergarten for the school year 2009-10. A 15-to-20-minute test will be administered to assess each prospective kindergarten student’s readiness skills; therefore, the child must accompany the parent to the appointment.
Required registration forms are available online at www.effinghamschools.com. Click on the School Enrollment tab and then the link to the Central Registration Center. It is recommended that parents have the required forms completed when they arrive for their child’s appointment.

Parents should bring the following items to the appointment:
• Birth certificate (not the “Record of Live Birth”)

• Immunization record - including the hepatitis B vaccination

• Certificate of eye, ear and dental screening

• Proof of residency - i.e., a utility receipt containing the parent’s name and street or road address. Post Office box numbers are not accepted as proof of residence.

• Social Security card

See “Student Enrollment Requirements” for detailed information regarding the required documentation.

The Effingham County Health Department will be at the Central Registration Center to administer Ear, Eye, Dental (EED) Exams and immunizations if needed. The Health Department charges $10 (cash only) for an Ear, Eye, Dental Exam. Immunizations are $14 (cash only) each for students age 18 and under who are not covered under private health insurance policies. Families with private insurance may find it less expensive to use their private physician for immunizations, as increased charges apply to those students who are covered under private insurance policies. Please contact the Effingham County Health Department at 754-6484 if you have specific questions about required immunizations or EED exams.

Appointments for kindergarten testing and registration are being scheduled from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Check the schedule below to determine what day your child’s school will be registering students and then call 754-2530 for an appointment on one of those two days. If you do not know which school your kindergarten student will attend, call the Central Registration Center at 754-2530.
