Locals make Darton merit list

Three Effingham County students have been named to the Merit List at Darton College in Albany for the summer 2010 semester.
 
Robert J. Schmelter of Guyton and Joshua B. Conner and Dana L. Shores of Rincon all earned the honor.
 
To qualify for the merit list, students must be part-time and have earned a 3.4 or higher grade point average.

The Effingham County Board of Education approved a $203 million fiscal year 2026 budget Thursday night, reflecting an 11% increase over last year. The rise is largely due to an $8 million spike in health and retirement benefit costs for employees. To help cover the shortfall, the district may raise the property tax millage rate, potentially increasing homeowners’ taxes by up to 12 percent.
