Savannah Technical College broke ground Tuesday for a major addition to its main campus.

The design for Savannah Technical College’s new classroom building is three stories, nearly 55,000 square feet and gives 26 new classrooms, a large seminar room and multiple faculty offices.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the structure unveiled the integration of the new building to the existing campus by connecting lobbies, improving student access to the new classrooms and learning facilities.

Soon to be the largest classroom building on campus, the new facility will reflect the existing buildings and reference future possibilities with the use of large expansive glass and metal panels. Interior spaces will be flooded with daylight, offering views that enhance the students’ learning environment.

The design, from Hansen Architects, implements sustainable design strategies, including low water use plumbing fixtures; recycled content flooring, ceiling systems and finishes; an advanced building envelope design; high efficiency glazing; and highly efficient mechanical systems.

The Effingham County Board of Education approved a $203 million fiscal year 2026 budget Thursday night, reflecting an 11% increase over last year. The rise is largely due to an $8 million spike in health and retirement benefit costs for employees. To help cover the shortfall, the district may raise the property tax millage rate, potentially increasing homeowners’ taxes by up to 12 percent.
