Television shows, ads increase insecurity

Dear Editor:
Lately, I have been really insecure about my looks. Many of the ads, commercials, and television shows I have seen recently have the prettiest girls that I have ever seen. They are very thin and can actually afford the very latest expensive styles. I am a girl with a regular sized body (not a size 2). I’m not as “bold and beautiful” as the girls on shows like “Gossip Girl.” Girls my age (12) do not want to watch shows with older, prettier, and thinner girls. I know that I’m not interested in watching this, at least. However, it makes me feel horribly self-conscious!

I just don’t see why the executives, producers, and directors of these ads and shows won’t decide to put someone who doesn’t look “perfect” on their ads or in their shows. Why don’t they put someone from here on a commercial or in a TV show? Hey, why not even make a talented girl from here the new spokesperson of Covergirl make-up? I would love to see a girl my age and that would certainly get all of my friends’ attention. I just hope that every girl feels good about themselves and who they are because any girl can be a Covergirl!

Student disagrees with uniform policy

Dear Editor:
As a student at South Effingham Middle School, I do not think that we should have to wear uniforms. If you don’t agree with this, at least make the teachers wear uniforms, too. All the uniforms do is make things worse. With uniforms, we don’t have any way to express ourselves without disrupting the class. We just feel worse with uniforms.

If we didn’t have uniforms, we’d be comfortable in school. We would be able to wear more of what fits our personality. The only thing we can decide on what to wear are shoes, and barely anyone looks down just to see what shoes you’re wearing. Everyone would be happier at school without uniforms. That’s why I don’t think we should have them.

Sincerely,
David Lariscy

Theft victims pay for towing of stolen truck

Dear Editor:
During 4th of July weekend at Tybee Island around 2 a.m., a thief stole our truck from a friend’s yard. Forty-five minutes later, the police pulled the guy over for suspected drunk driving.

Around 9 that morning we filed a police report. Thirty days after they impounded our truck, the thief went to go claim it. By this time it was registered stolen.

A month after the thief tried to claim it, the Tybee Island police chief called us and said that our truck was found.
When we went to go get it they wanted to charge us $1,250 for towing and storage! We talked them down to $450, but we are the victims — why should we have to pay due to the ignorance of both the thief and the police? Tom Jordan of Savannah wrote that he has also had this problem.

Stop abortion

Dear Editor:
I think that abortion is wrong. Abortion should be illegal. When you abort your child you are killing your own child. People who abort their children should be put in jail.

People who have to resort to abortion should have to deal with their pregnancy. It is their fault for getting pregnant. Why would you get pregnant when you knew you would have to abort your child? I think that the legal system should make abortion illegal as soon as possible. Abortion is way unacceptable.

Pooler parkway unkempt

Dear Editor:
Pooler Parkway is a very unkempt road. It doesn’t have much grass. This makes it look rundown. The places that do have grass aren’t cut. Also, there are some power lines that are dangling.

If someone were to come here for the first time, what would his or her impression be? I bet it wouldn’t be good. Unlike Pooler, Highway 80 in Bloomingdale looks very nice. When they made it, they put grass down and they take care of it. Pooler Parkway should do this. Pooler Parkway just isn’t a nice road.

Please, put down the cigarettes

Dear Editor:
I am very upset about how many people smoke. It is very bad for you and it makes you look nasty. It increases your risk of dying, because it will turn your lungs pitch black! It may also ruin your clothes.

The thing that is so bad about smoking is it is so hard to quit. The reason that it is so hard to quit is because you get addicted to the nicotine that is in the cigarettes. To all the people who say they “can’t quit,” if you really want to you can. So to all the smokers, smoking is not only very nasty but deadly—you can quit. Just do it.

Everyone can help with pollution problem

Dear Editor:
The pollution in Savannah is getting worse and worse everyday.  Whenever I am walking downtown, I always see bottles and paper in the river. Even on the sidewalk and road you find trash. I do not understand how people can be so lazy and rude to not even throw their trash in the trash can.  Another thing adding to the pollution is the many factories along the river.

One solution to slow down or stop the pollution is to put more trash cans in Savannah.  If people could find a trash can easier instead of wandering around the city to find one, then they would most likely throw the trash away.

Another solution is to put vents on the factories so that not as much air pollution can escape the factories. The main solution is for people to not be so lazy that they cannot even throw away their trash.  Just throw it away!

Sincerely,
Jonathan Templeton
