State, shoppers gear up for sales tax free weekend

This weekend, July 30 and 31, certain items will be exempt from sales taxes.

All clothing under $100 each is exempt from sales tax.

Examples include:

Athletic clothing

Baby clothes

Belts

Costumes

Dresses

Diapers

Hats

Pants

Shirts

Shoes

Sleepwear

Socks

Underwear

Clothing accessories — such as jewelry, handbags and cosmetics — will have sales tax applied.

Computers, computer components, and prewritten software under $1,000 each are tax-free as long as you purchase them for noncommercial or personal use.

Examples include:

Desktop computers

Laptops

Tablets

Book readers

Computer cables, batteries, and docking stations

Mouses

Prewritten computer software

Printers and cartridges

Scanners

Sales taxes will be applied to items such as cell phones, computer bags, copy machines, digital cameras, game systems, projectors, surge protectors and TVs.

Here are the items that make this sales tax holiday so timely — the school supplies. Basic school supplies that are under $20 each will be tax-free.

Binders

Book bags

Calculators

Crayons

Erasers

Folders

Glue

Index cards

Lunch boxes

Notebooks

Pencils, pens, markers and highlighters

Reference books, textbooks, maps and globes

Rulers, compasses, protractors
