Looking to the Bible throughout your marriage is a great way to remember the importance of the vows that you took to stay engaged with your faith and your spouse on a daily basis.

When a marriage goes through its ups and downs, where do you turn for guidance?

In a recent Pew Research religious landscape survey, 71 percent of the nation said they believe in God with absolute certainty, and 56 percent say that religion is very important in their lives.

With over half of the nation holding religion in high regards, many turn to religion to cope with life’s ups and downs. A 2014 study out of Columbia University found that those who practiced religion were more protected from depression compared to those who did not practice. The study showed that subjects who highly valued religion had a thicker brain cortex, therefore protecting the part of the brain where major depression would occur.

Looking to the Bible throughout your marriage is a great way to remember the importance of the vows that you took to stay engaged with your faith and your spouse on a daily basis. Here are some Bible verses to help you throughout your marriage, both in good times and in bad.

Remind yourself of the strength and power of marriage.

"Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." Ecclesiastes 4:12

"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth." Genesis 1:27-28

"Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate." Mark 10:9

"Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun—all your meaningless days. For this is your lot in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun." Ecclesiastes 9:9

Remember the power of patience and forgiveness.

"Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins." 1 Peter 4:8

"Be completely humble and gentle; Be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace." Ephesians 4:2-3

"And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you." Ephesians 4:32

Do your best to resist life's temptations.

"No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it."1 Corinthians 10:13

"Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral." Hebrews 13:4

Trust in the Lord above all else.

"Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love." 1 John 4:7-8

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths." Proverbs 3:5-6

"Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares The Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11
