After years of dragging her kids through the airport, as well as enduring children kicking seats and screaming on flights, travel and lifestyle blogger Hilarye Fuller put her experiences to good use by authoring the newly released children's book, "Monsters Don’t Ride on Airplanes."
With three daughters herself, Fuller is no stranger to the stresses that accompany traveling with small children. She wanted a fun tool to teach kids not to kick the seat in front of them, to use quiet voices and to be respectful of other passengers.
"I've either witnessed my own children doing these, other children or have been the victim of these behaviors," she said.
Knowing that children respond well to books with funny characters, she wrote "Monsters Don't Ride on Airplanes," which is designed to help children and parents achieve desirable behavior through the travel process.
"(The book) spells out why these grouchy characters are not welcome on airplanes. They are messy, they expose their smelly feet (and) they don’t wait their turn in line," she said. "I made a list of all the things we tell our girls not to do on the way to the airport, and made sure the monsters were acting out in these ways."
Fuller hopes her book will be a fun and effective way for children to understand that these behaviors are not courteous to those around them and will help parents feel more comfortable traveling with small children.
"It is difficult traveling with children, but the rewards are so worth it," she said. "The memories you make and the bond you create are lasting. By showing your kids the world or taking family vacations, you are giving them a gift. This all in the end will out-weigh the drawbacks."
The ebook is available on iTunes, Amazon and downloadable to iPads and Kindles. The iTunes version has an added feature with the voice of a major commercial airline pilot reading the book.
