THE INTERNET — Google put together a video to not only sum up our year of Internet searches, but what our searches may mean about us as humans.
The video begins with a statement and a question: “In 2014 we searched trillions of times. What do these searches say about us?”
Instead of giving us what must be impressively massive numbers, Google presents universally human themes and sorts our most common searches into those categories.
According to Google’s own interpretations of our searches, we as humans searched more about hope than fear, and we searched more about science than fiction. But we also searched to make sense of the tragedy and loss around us. And so it goes as the video flashes glimpses of stories, people and viral videos.
The brilliance of the video, or why it at least affected me in some way, is that Google chooses to put a human element into the cold, hard numbers that sustain the company. Google is recognizing that the numbers would mean nothing or wouldn’t even exist if not for the humans driving them.
