The second session of Dream smArt Kids Camp wrapped up on Friday with 12 kids showcasing their “goofy birds” and “sea treasure” crafts while donning their unique versions of a Matisse-inspired T-shirt.

Donna Hellmann started the camp this summer as a way to encourage kids 7 to 12 years old to explore art as an educational tool. She held two, weeklong sessions this summer: one in early June and the most recent at the end of July. In July, the spotlight artists included Matisse, Chagall and Rousseau.

“If school wasn’t starting next week, I’d want to have another one,” Hellmann said.

Hellmann taught art to first through ninth graders in Atlanta before moving to Effingham County two years ago. She currently teaches after school sessions to kids six through 12 and will begin the fall classes in September at her art studio in Springfield.
