EFFINGHAM COUNTY, Ga. — A man has been arrested following a fatal head-on collision Friday evening on Old Augusta Road South, according to the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded shortly after 5 p.m. to a crash involving a Ford Escape and a Chevy Silverado. Investigators said the Escape, driven by 27-year-old Deiby Janamejoy Jansasoy, was traveling north when it crossed the center line and struck the oncoming Silverado driven by 47-year-old Michael Sharpe of Ludowica.
Sharpe was trapped in his vehicle and had to be extricated by fire personnel. He was transported to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Jansasoy was also taken to the hospital but allegedly attempted to leave before being discharged. Authorities cited that behavior, along with an outstanding Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer, in determining he was a flight risk. He was taken into custody and transported to the Effingham County Jail.
Jansasoy is charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, DUI, failure to maintain lane and driving while unlicensed. Officials said additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
