More than 120 women — and one man — came out to Mill Creek Lodge for the first Laugh, Lunch and Learn on Thursday to support breast cancer awareness and screenings in Effingham County.

“I don’t care if you make contributions; I don’t care if you buy something, but you’ve got to do something, not just talk about it,” said motivational humorist Bobbie Staten, guest speaker for the event. “Pink’s pretty, but it ain’t worth a (darn).”

Staten, a former nurse from North Carolina, doled out the laughs along with themes of caring about personal health and community health as well as “boosting up” and “shining on” those around us.

“We don’t get forever, you get today,” said Staten of her own revelation from her husband’s heart attack. “… Be present, because it is a present.”
