The United Way prize patrol made another trip to Effingham Monday afternoon to award an unsuspecting paraprofessional at Guyton Elementary.

Vanessa Pelfrey, 24, was quietly assisting a student in Debbie Tovar’s classroom when the entourage came, wielding cameras, confetti and balloons to present her $2,000 worth of gift cards to Publix, just in time for the holidays she said.

“I will probably buy Thanksgiving for my family, all the groceries for that,” said Pelfrey, who lives with her sister but says she has a lot of extended family.
