Rincon native Torian White was recently promoted to assistant principal at Rockdale Open Campus in Conyers.

White, the 1999 valedictorian of South Effingham High School and the class president, was the speaker at the SEHS class of 2010 commencement exercises.

White has spent seven years in education, all in Rockdale County. He was a high school mathematics teacher for four years, spent one year as an instructional math coach and was graduation coach for two years. He is a member of the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, the Professional Association of Georgia Educators and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

White is the son of Rev. Delmons White, the pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church in Guyton, and Mrs. Herlene Blake White. He and his wife Tasheina Canty White have two sons, Tyler and Trenton.

White graduated with a B.S. in mathematics education from the University of Georgia. He also holds a master’s degree in foundations of education, a specialist degree in educational leadership and will begin next month on a doctorate in curriculum and instruction at Mercer University (Atlanta).

The Open Campus, a non-traditional high school, offers a small, personalized environment where previously unsuccessful students are supported in a manner that helps them graduate. Since its inception two years ago, the school has produced 126 graduates.

Most — if not all — of these students would have been dropouts without the caring, committed staff and program design that emanates from the Open Campus. The Web site is www.rockdale.k12.ga.us/Schools/Evening/default.aspx.
