The proposed deepening of the Savannah Harbor is expected to bring in more ships and more business for one of the world’s busiest ports — and Georgia Ports Authority officials are trying to prepare for the continued wave of ships and cargo.

Work on the Last Mile project is expected to start by end of this year, GPA director of administration Jamie McCurry told an Effingham County Chamber of Commerce breakfast Thursday morning at the Effingham Career Academy.

A decade ago, Savannah was the 10th largest port in the nation, in terms of volume. Now, it’s No. 4, behind only Los Angeles, Long Beach, Calif., and New York-New Jersey.
