City, business owners try to push revitalization

City council members and Springfield business owners have vowed to do what they can do restore the city’s downtown business district.

Property owner Pete Lancaster approached council members at their meeting Tuesday night to issue his concerns about empty and deteriorating buildings along Laurel Street. Lancaster owns two buildings on Laurel Street and recently leased one of them to business owner Jamey Stancell.

Lancaster said Stancell tried to get him to buy the old NAPA building directly across Laurel Street from his store, but the building adjacent to it, a former service station that has been empty for a while, led him to speak up.

“The property next to it is a disgrace,” he said. “I want to see city council do something about it. I’m concerned about the blighted areas.”
